The official title of this image is Baddies, but in my mind, it will always be called Appendix. It was taken after I had surgery. Friends came to visit me, and somehow ended up trying on my clothes—things I wasn't even sure I'd wear myself. It started as a joke, but there was something tender and curious about it too. They were teenage boys, playing with femininity through fabric and pose. The scene is lighthearted, but I always come back to the physicality of it. If any of them had appendicitis, the scar would show right there. It's a photo about bodies—growing, changing, performing—and about that strange closeness between humor, pain, and becoming.
